How to Use Photoshop With ChatGPT
Adobe put Photoshop inside ChatGPT. You upload a photo, describe the change in plain English, and it edits it. Here's the setup and what it will and won't do.
The short answer
To use Photoshop with ChatGPT, connect it once from your ChatGPT settings under Apps and Connectors, then upload a photo and describe the change you want the way you'd say it out loud. Photoshop applies each change as its own adjustment, which stays adjustable on a slider afterwards, and every new edit stacks on the last without disturbing the rest of the image. It does adjustments and effects only. It will not swap objects or invent new parts of a picture, and the connection takes about 60 seconds on any ChatGPT plan.

I don't use Photoshop.
Which is exactly why I'm the right person to tell you about this.
I've avoided it for the same two reasons you probably have. The learning curve is enormous, and the monthly cost is high next to almost everything else you'd pay for.
So when I tell you something's changed here, I'm not a Photoshop person defending Photoshop. I'm someone who needs a quick fix on a thumbnail or a marketing image and has no interest in learning panels, masks and layers to get it.
Here's what happened. Adobe put Photoshop inside ChatGPT. You describe what you want, and it does the work.
You're not learning the tool. You're asking for the result.
Watch the video above and you'll see exactly what it looks like on screen, including the part where it politely refuses.
Key takeaways
- 01
You describe the edit in plain language instead of finding the right panel. That's the whole shift. The power of the tool is there, and the requirement to learn its interface is not, which is the part that kept most of us out.
- 02
Connecting it is a one-time job of about 60 seconds. It lives in ChatGPT under Settings, then Apps and Connectors, alongside the other Adobe apps. Once it's on, it's on.
- 03
Every edit becomes its own adjustable layer, and they stack. Make the background black and white, then change one object's colour, and the second edit doesn't undo the first. Each one keeps a slider you can go back and tune.
- 04
Photoshop in ChatGPT does adjustments and effects, not generative fill. Ask it to add an object or replace one and it simply won't. This version isn't rebuilding your photo, it's correcting and styling it.
- 05
Adobe Express and Acrobat connect exactly the same way. Express is the templates one for social graphics and thumbnails. Acrobat handles PDFs. Same settings screen, same few clicks.
I want to be straight with you about what this is and isn't, because I said it plainly in the video: "This probably isn't aimed at professional designers who already live inside of Photoshop."
If you already know Photoshop, you'll find this version limited on purpose. It's a lighter one, and Adobe means it to be.
It's aimed at the rest of us. Creators, marketers, business owners who need an image to look right and have never once wanted to learn what a layer mask is.
I got through the whole setup and my first few edits in one sitting, without knowing the software. That's the test that mattered to me.

Connect Photoshop inside ChatGPT
In ChatGPT, click your profile name in the bottom left, then go to Settings and open Apps and Connectors.
You'll see the Adobe apps listed there, Photoshop among them.
Click Photoshop, connect it, and accept the terms. Close settings and go back to your main window.
That's the 60 seconds. You don't do it again.
Bring in a photo
Click the plus icon near the prompt box. Photoshop now shows up as an option there.
Add a photo the way you normally would, uploading it from your computer. That image becomes your reference image inside ChatGPT.
You have two ways to work here, and you're not locked into either. You can generate an image in ChatGPT and pass it straight into Photoshop, or you can bring one of your own photos from your business or your channel.
It'll give you instructions on what to do next, so you're not sitting there wondering what you're allowed to type.
Describe your first change
Say it the way you'd say it to a person. I typed "make the background black and white."
After a moment the updated image comes back.
Now look for the properties panel icon and open it. There's a slider in there for the intensity of the effect, so if the black and white is too heavy, you pull it back yourself.
Stack the next edit on top
I asked it to make the basket green.
Now the part worth understanding. It doesn't recolour the whole image. It makes a shape, cuts out that shape, and creates a targeted hue and saturation adjustment aimed only at that area.
Then the properties panel gives you hue, saturation and lightness for that one adjustment.
So each new edit builds on the one before it, and they stay isolated from each other. That's layers, without you having to think in layers.
Add an effect, and take it off if you don't like it
Type "add creative effect" and ChatGPT picks one and applies it. In the properties panel you can push the strength up or down, which increases or decreases the glow in the brighter parts of the image.
You can also name the effect you want instead of letting it choose. Grain, halftone and duotone are all there.
If an effect doesn't work, tell it to remove that particular effect. That's the whole undo.
And if you want to know everything available to you, ask ChatGPT directly for the full list of adjustments and effects and it'll list them out.
Open it in Photoshop on the web if you need more
At any point you can click open in Photoshop, and ChatGPT generates a link.
Open that link and your image loads into Photoshop on the web. You'll need to sign in, or sign up if you don't have an account.
In the layers panel you'll see each adjustment sitting there as its own layer, exactly as it was built.
Even without a paid Creative Cloud account you can keep editing with the standard tools. You just won't have the premium features.
Download it when you're done
When the image is right, download it and use it.
No subscription, no tutorial, no learning curve to climb first.
What it looked like on my screen
Make the background black and white
The simplest possible start, and a good one for finding out whether you trust it.
One sentence typed, one image back, and a slider to dial the intensity to where you actually wanted it. The slider matters more than it sounds like it does, because it means you're not stuck re-prompting to get closer.
Make the basket green
This is the one that changed my mind about it.
It didn't tint the whole photo green. It isolated the basket, built a targeted hue and saturation adjustment for just that region, and left the rest alone.
Then it handed me hue, saturation and lightness controls for that one area. That's a real edit, not a filter.
Add a creative effect
I typed "add creative effect" and let it choose, which is the lazy version and works fine.
The properties panel then controlled the strength, brightening or pulling back the glow in the lighter areas.
When I wanted something specific instead, naming it worked. Grain, halftone, duotone.
The thing it refuses to do
I asked it to add an object, and then to replace one. It won't.
No generative fill, no subject replacement. You're not swapping things in and out or inventing parts of the picture that were never there.
I'd rather tell you that up front than have you discover it halfway through a job. This version is adjustments and effects, not reconstruction.
Adobe Express, for when you needed a graphic instead
Express connects the same way in the same settings screen, and it's the one I think a lot of you will use more than Photoshop.
It's built for social posts, thumbnails and marketing visuals, with templates, in the same spirit as Canva.
I asked it for a flier. It brought up templates, I picked one, and from there I just gave ChatGPT the information and it filled in the rest.
Acrobat is the third one, and it's exactly what you'd guess. Merging PDFs and combining documents, without leaving the chat.

Questions people actually ask
Do I need a Photoshop subscription to use this?+
No. That's the part that surprised people most. The connection happens inside ChatGPT, and you don't need to be paying Adobe to make your first edits.
Does it work on the free ChatGPT plan?+
At the time I recorded this, yes, it worked on any ChatGPT plan including the free one. Things like this do change, so check your own Apps and Connectors screen rather than taking my word for it six months from now.
How do I connect Photoshop to ChatGPT?+
Click your profile name in the bottom left of ChatGPT, go to Settings, open Apps and Connectors, find Photoshop in the Adobe apps, click it, connect, and accept the terms. Then close settings. It takes about a minute and you only do it once.
Can ChatGPT remove or replace an object in my photo?+
Not in this version of Photoshop. There's no generative fill and no subject replacement, so it won't swap objects out or invent parts of the image. It adjusts and it styles, and that's the boundary.
What can I actually change in a photo?+
Adjustments and effects. Colour changes, black and white, targeted changes to one part of the image, and creative effects like grain, halftone and duotone. Each one arrives as its own adjustment with sliders you can go back and tune.
Can I undo an edit I don't like?+
Yes, and you do it by saying so. Tell it to remove that particular effect and it comes off. Because each edit is isolated, taking one off doesn't disturb the others.
Do I need an Adobe account?+
Only if you click open in Photoshop and carry on editing on the web, which asks you to sign in or sign up. Even then, a free account lets you keep working with the standard tools. The premium features are the part behind the paywall.
Is this like Canva?+
Adobe Express is the one that's like Canva, and it connects to ChatGPT the same way Photoshop does. Templates for social posts, thumbnails and marketing graphics. Photoshop is the photo editing side, and they're separate connections doing separate jobs.
